Roof Safety in the Winter

Is your commercial roof safe and OSHA compliant?

Winter in New England poses increased dangers when working on a rooftop. We are here to help you identify the risks and become compliant with OSHA regulations. Together, these efforts can mitigate risk and keep rooftop work safe year round!

What Dangers are there?

Lets face it, rooftop work always poses a natural danger. Have you stopped to think about the increased dangers when there is ice or snow cover on the roof? Obviously there is the increased potential for slips and falls but let us also keep in mind the dangers that are hidden beneath. We are here to help you identify these potentially hidden hazards and be proactive in ensuring safety.

What can you do to Ensure Safety?

Here are a few steps Silktown Roofing, Inc. suggests to ensure safety on your rooftop this winter.

  1. Limit rooftop access to professionals (including snow removal efforts)

  2. Implement a rooftop hazard assessment and identify all rooftop penetrations (including but not limited to)

    • Skylights

    • Smoke Vents

    • Pipe Boots

    • Gas/Electrical Lines

    • Roof Hatches

  3. Ensure all penetrations are compliant with OSHA fall protection requirements

One major risk on a rooftop when there is snow cover are falls through skylights and other like openings. Unfortunately, each year there are serious injuries and/or fatalities from falls of this nature. OSHA requires that all skylights are protected with a screen or a fixed standard railing on all exposed sides. (OSHA General Industry Standard 29 CFR 1910.23(a)(4) and 1910.23(e)(8)).
