Tips for Commercial Roof Storm Damage

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH COMMERCIAL ROOF DAMAGE CAUSED BY STORMS

Any roof damage caused by a storm must be handled quickly to avoid further destruction of the roof and building. We understand the time following a severe storm is overwhelming so our team has listed our top four recommendations for roof inspection and roof repairs following a storm.

Commercial Roof Storm Damage

Step 1: Inspect

When conditions are deemed safe, you will want to have your roof inspected for damage.   If you have any visual damage (ceiling stains, active leaks, missing roofing materials, heavy debris, etc.) you will want to document your inspection with photographs.  We always recommend having an experienced and licensed professional roofing contractor handle your inspections.  These are trained individuals who will be able to give an extensive valuation of the damage and overall health of the roofing system. Be certain to never go on a structurally jeopardized roofing system and always exercise extreme caution when on a rooftop.

Step 2: Notify

With any visible damage you will want to notify your insurance carrier as well as any manufacturer who holds a warranty on your roofing system.  Though storm damage is not a warrantable repair, the manufacturer has set requirements for repairs for any roof under warranty.  It is critical only contractors who are certified by the warranty issuing manufacturer handle necessary repairs.  If work is done on a roof under manufacturer warranty by a non-certified contractor you will risk voiding the warranty.

Step 3: Educate yourself

Make sure you receive formal quotes for all repairs and have a good understanding of any and all recommendations being made to you.  Always check to ensure the repairing contractor has proper licensing and credentials to be making repairs to your roofing system.

Step 4: Take Action

Assuming conditions are deemed safe, it is always recommended emergency roof repairs are handled in a timely manner before the situation escalates.  Once moisture has penetrated through the roofing system the roofing materials are in jeopardy of failure.
