Preserving History, One Slate at a Time: Silktown Roofing’s Role in the Award-Winning Sterling House Restoration

Silktown Roofing is proud to share that our work on the Sterling House Community Center in Stratford, Connecticut, has been recognized as part of the First Place winner in the Civic (Small) category at the 2025 Connecticut Building Congress (CBC) Project Team Awards. This prestigious honor is a testament not only to collaboration among outstanding professionals but to the value of preserving Connecticut’s architectural heritage with care, craftsmanship, and integrity.

Award-Winning Excellence in Civic Restoration

The Sterling House, originally constructed in 1886 and designed by renowned architect Bruce Price, is an iconic Romanesque mansion that has long served as a cornerstone for Stratford’s community programs. As part of a multi-disciplinary restoration team, Silktown Roofing was entrusted with one of the project’s most critical elements: the slate roof replacement.

Receiving top recognition from the CBC underscores the importance of honoring historical aesthetics while meeting today’s standards for durability and performance. The award celebrates not just the building's transformation, but the collaborative spirit and technical precision that brought it to life.

Our Contribution: Slate Roof Replacement

Restoring a slate roof on a structure of this historic caliber is no small task. It demands:

  • Historical sensitivity to replicate the original architectural style.

  • Material precision, sourcing slate that matches the original in size, color, and texture.

  • Expert installation techniques to ensure longevity and weather resistance without compromising the building's historic character.

Silktown Roofing brought decades of roofing experience to this endeavor, leveraging our team’s slate craftsmanship and understanding of heritage construction to deliver a roof that is both functional and faithful to the past.

We worked closely with Hoffmann Architects + Engineers, Turner Construction Company and other project stakeholders to ensure the roof met technical and preservation requirements. The result: a durable, elegant roofing system that now safeguards one of Stratford’s most treasured landmarks for future generations.

A Roof for the Future, Rooted in the Past

The new slate roof is more than an architectural feature—it’s a symbol of enduring craftsmanship and care. At Silktown Roofing, we believe that roofing is not just about materials; it's about preserving legacy, protecting communities, and building with purpose.

We are honored that our work contributed to an award-winning project and even more proud that it supports a building so vital to Stratford’s community services.

As we look to future projects, this recognition inspires us to continue raising the standard in historical restoration, craftsmanship, and project teamwork.
